The good people at Microsoft have announced that 155,000 HD-DVD player add-ons for the Xbox 360 have been sold to date in the US alone, which is a pretty amazing figure when you consider that back in April the HD DVD group announced that only 100,000 stand alone players had been sold in the US. This makes the Xbox add on the most popular HD-DVD player, but also the biggest selling accessory for the Xbox 360.
On the flip side of the High Definition movie wars, there is more Blu-Ray hardware in the hands of consumers at the moment, with the Playstation 3 being a big driver of Blu-Ray hardware. The big difference here though is that the PS3 is usually purchased with gaming as its primary purpose, as opposed to the HD-DVD sales which represent people that are really after the movies. This statistic is reflected in the fact that according to CNET.com, people with HD-DVD players are buying more movies, averaging 4 movies to each HD-DVD player sold in comparison with Blu-Ray’s 1 movie per player.
Overall though when you take an unbiased look at the HD war, Blu-Ray is getting the upper hand, more places are stocking it a lot more heavily than HD-DVD, and total sales are definitely in Blu-Ray’s favor. If HD-DVD does manage to go downhill though I reckon it would be a pretty safe bet that Microsoft would release a Blu-Ray player add-on for the 360. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Dood, did you pull that “the biggest selling accessory for the Xbox 360.” thing out of your ass or what? No way the HD DVD drive is more popular than the camera, or even controllers.
Which, last time I checked, counted as accessories.

“By “biggest-selling,” Microsoft may be referring to the overall revenue, as it would seem unlikely that the HD DVD add-on would be more popular than extra controllers”

Yea, the quote about biggest selling was what Microsoft said about it, but yea I think refers to the biggest revenue raiser for MS.
